Introduction to a Future College Basketball Coach

Introduction of a Future College Basketball Coach
My name is Cody Johnson; I am currently a senior at the University of Oklahoma and my major is Health & Exercise Science. The best thing about my major is learning how to properly take care of your body and improving your overall health. I did not have a favorite class last semester; they all had reason to why I did not like them. My least favorite class was Chemistry because of the amount of stress it put in my life. Although Chemistry was my least favorite class, passing Chemistry was my biggest accomplishment last semester. I did not go anywhere over break because I work as a student manager for the Men’s Basketball team, so I had to be here for practice most of the break.

I do not have a favorite book, at the moment. My favorite movie, right now, is Straight Outta Compton. Monday Night RAW, Smackdown, Diners, Drive-Ins, & Drives, Chopped, and whatever I find on Netflix are some of my favorite TV shows. My favorite genres of music include Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, and Singer/Songwriter. Kendrick Lamar is my favorite artist to listen to and here is why: (Kendrick Lamar - i). My goals for the rest of life is graduating college, becoming a D1 basketball coach, and starting a family. I have many different foods that are my favorites, many have changed some since I have changed my diet, but my favorite foods include blueberry lemon cheesecake, peanut butter chocolate cheesecake, jerk chicken, gyro beef meat, and sauerkraut with brots. I do not really have any types of foods that I do not like; I am not very picky when it comes to eating food. My hobbies that I indulge in during my free time include playing pickup basketball, Xbox, riding my bike, plus spending time with both friends and family.

  1. Welcome to the class, Cody! It sounds like this is going to be an amazing year for OU basketball, so I bet you are going to get all kinds of good energy from that part of your life that will energize everything else you are involved in. And maybe you can do some Kendrick-Lamar-inspired rap versions of the battles and triumphs of the mythological heroes: you will get to see plenty of heroes in action in this class like Odysseus in ancient Greece, or Yamato in Japan, Makoma in Africa and on and on. That's a huge part of the mythical tradition everywhere around the world... the heroes of their times! So, thanks for getting started early, and I hope you will have fun with the class!

  3. Hi Cody!
I bet you're super excited to be a senior and getting that much closer to graduation! I know I would be for sure. I have to agree with you about Chemistry, I took both 1 and 2 last year and they were the worst classes I've ever taken, which is why I was also so glad for them to be over. Also, you being a student manager for the men’s basketball team seems like a pretty cool job! I bet you get to see and meet all kinds of new people, especially different college athletes that a lot of people don’t get a chance to meet. In addition, when I read your list of foods, it made my mouth water! All of the things you listed sound great (especially the cheesecakes, yum!). Best of luck through the rest of your (final?) semester! And good luck with finding a great coaching job after graduation!

  4. Nice to meet you Cody!
It looks like we're both seniors this semester! I'm excited for graduation, but I also feel like I'm going to miss OU... That's so cool that you're a student manager for the basketball team. How did you get the position? Is sports medicine a path that you would be interested in? I bet it was exciting to meet all the college athletes! Also, congratulations on passing chemistry! I know it's not the easiest subject around, but I love chemistry which is why I decided to minor in it. Whoa peanut butter chocolate cheesecake? I have never had it, but now it will be a goal to try it! Where can I find such a wonderful dessert?

  5. Hi Cody! Your introduction was very interesting to read! I am a health and exercise science minor and I love getting to learn about the body/health as well! I do not know much about basketball but I think it is really cool that you want to be a coach one day. I also have never tried peanut butter chocolate cheesecake… but it sounds absolutely delicious. That is definitely on my 2016-bucket list! Have a great semester!

  6. Hi Cody! Congrats on being a senior! You are almost done with college! That is so cool that you want to be a basketball coach after you graduate. That is awesome! I am also not a very picky eater, so I can definitely relate to you on that one! It was nice to meet you, and I look forward to reading some of your work this semester!

  7. I've always thought that Health and Exercise Science would be such a cool major! My mom is a dietitian, so growing up I was always conscious of how important it is to have a balanced diet and treat your body well. Being a basketball coach would be such a fun career; I hope you meet all of your future goals!

  8. Hello,
My name is Ashlie. Before I switched my major I was studying sports medicine. I was highly interested in learning about the human body and the best way to take care of it. I was even more interested in the health side to it, such as eating habits. I still continue my interest in these subject in my spare time. I still take a few nutrition classes as my electives. You got it right with cheesecake being one of your favorite! Good luck with classes this semester.

  9. I enjoyed getting to know you through your post! Its cool that you have such a great end goal in mind of becoming a basketball coach. I have no idea what I want to do after graduation. All I know is something in advertising, so I think its cool when people have such clear goals! I wish you the best of luck achieving them!

  10. It is good to meet you Cody! I am also a HES major at OU so I know what you mean about some of those more boring classes and chemistry. I think that awesome you are so passionate about being a basketball coach. I read one of your stories earlier and you seem pretty knowledgable of the game. Good luck this last year and maybe we will end up meeting in a class or at the HES building.

  11. Hey Cody! I’m an HES major as well, and am following the Pre-Physical Therapy route. Becoming a DI basketball coach sounds like a really awesome job though! I’m not a huge basketball person, but I do love our Thunder! My family is German so we have sauerkraut and brats all the time (no issues by me though) and I love gyros. Hope you are having a great semester!

  12. Hey Cody nice to meet you,
Good luck for you on your senior year, I think you must be so excited to almost finish and get your degree from OU, I found this funny how you hated chemistry, where chemistry is all what I do all day , since I am majoring in chemical engineering, I tried to play the YouTube video because I never heard of Kendrick Lamar but unfortunately the video did not play.

  13. I think its cool your major is Health and Exercise Science. I'm actually sitting in their building right now waiting for a meeting with them! I'm an advertising major and I work at an agency called Lindsey + Asp. One of the accounts I'm on there is the Health and Exercise Science Department and we're working with them to rebrand their image and create new logos for them, etc! So you might notice some changes coming up here soon!

I hope you are successful at achieving your goals of becoming a basketball coach! I think it's cool that you have such a specific idea of what you want to do!

  14. Hey it is great to meet you! What an awesome job working with basketball team! I hope that leads you into the successes you are after. Chopped is one of my favorite shows too. Honestly, I love to eat so I watch it to dream about eating the food they are making. I have not seen Straight Outta Compton but I have heard good thins so I will have to try it out soon! I hope you have a great semester and good luck!

  15. Hi Cody! That’s awesome that you’re the student manager for the Men’s Basketball team. I can only imagine how busy you are now that the team has made it to the Final Four! I also took Chemistry last semester and thought it was extremely hard but it really did feel great passing and knowing that I never had to write another lab report for that class! I also like watching Diners, Drive-In’s, and Dives... it’s fun going to restaurants that Guy goes to that you see on the show!

  16. Hey Cody, nice to meet you! Like you said on mine, but hey I'm an HES major too! All my luck goes to Houston this next week! Houston is my hometown and hopefully we can get a win there! It's a great city but watch out for that humidity, it will get you! Give that city the biggest hello and see you soon from me! Boomer Sooner!

  17. I wonder what it's like being a Health & Exercise major, there seem to be a lot of those in this class. It's true that you chose a major that can improve your health throughout your whole life. I often wish I could be healthier and more athletic, but I am destined for a desk job. Good luck with your dream of becoming a coach.

  18. Hi Cody! It is very cool that you already know what you want to do after you graduate... you are very lucky haha. I have heard the horrors of both Chem and OChem, so I applaud you for getting through it. Do you get to travel with the team when they go to games? That would be so cool if you do! I don't know much about sports...

  19. Hi Cody! It was nice to read a little bit about you! I can definitely sympathize with how you felt about chemistry! That and Chem 2 have definitely my least favorite classes during college. It's really cool that you are a basketball manager. I bet you got to have a lot of fun times this year with the team, and also probably some sad times. I hope everything works out for you with the rest of this semester!

  20. Hey Cody! That is so cool that you get to work as a manager for the mens basketball team. I love basketball, and I am sure this was a pretty exciting year to do that! I was also a health and exercise major for a while, such a neat degree path, and can lead to such an impactful career.
