Week 4 Reading Diary: Jataka Tales

Week 4 Reading Diary:

Jataka Tales’ Reading A:
·       I enjoy the dialogue between the characters of The Monkey and the Crocodile, it gives the story a great deal of substance.
·       The story of The Monkey and the Crocodile is showing that while the crocodile was the one trying to use his wit to get the monkey’s heart, it was the monkey who outwitted the crocodile.
·       I liked the little bit of comical relief at the of How the Turtle Saved His Own Life, it was used in great context after the buildup of wanting to figure what way they were going to try and kill this “Demon” of a turtle.
·       The Turtle Who Couldn’t Stop Talking has a subliminal/background message of knowing when to keep your mouth shut and not talk because it can get you into trouble or put you in danger.
·        The Ox Who Won the Forfeit, the ox is wise and hard working. The owner of the ox acted in a different way than he normally did because he had put money on the line, and the ox did not respond to it well. Once the owner learned of his mistake, he went back and motivated the ox to pull the hundred wagons.
·       Foolish, Timid Rabbit, the rabbit gets his mind into thinking something that is not true, but is still able to convince many other animals to join him, until the lion uses his wisdom and checks out the situation to prove that nothing is wrong.
