Week 9 Reading Diary, continued

Week 9 Reading Diary, continued

The Ball Game of the Birds and Animals
·       The animals challenged the birds to a great game of ball play, and the birds rightfully accepted the animals’ challenge. The leaders made all of the arrangements and decided on a day to play, and when that day came they all met at the agreed location. The animals were on the grass by the river and the birds were over top in the trees.
·       The Bear was the captain of the animals; he was so strong and big that he could knock down anyone and anything in his way. He showed off his strength by throwing around great big logs and bragged about what he would do to the birds during the game. The Terrapin was useful due to his shell being so hard that he could absorb the biggest of hits and they would not affect him. The Terrapin also bragged about how he would crush the birds. Also, the Deer was with them and he could outrun every other animal in the game. These three together made a great team.
·       The birds’ team consisted of the Eagle, their captain, with the Hawk and the great Tla’nuwa, all of them were swift and strong in flight, but still had a little fright within them because of the animals. Two little four-legged, hardly bigger than field mice animals climbed up the tree to join the birds because the animals had scolded them and told them to leave. The birds allowed them to join their team.
·        The birds made wings and stretched the skin for this animal, in which turned into a flying squirrel. The Bat also joined the team of the birds. This formidable team out did the Bear and Terrapin during the game as neither of them touched the ball the whole game due to the efforts of the Martin and Bat saving the ball after it dropped.

Week 9 Reading Diary

Week 9 Reading Diary
How the Terrapin Beat the Rabbit
·       Everyone knew the Rabbit was a great runner and thought nothing of the Terrapin except for the fact that he was a slow traveler, but he was a fighter/warrior and very arrogant. This lead to the Rabbit and Terrapin always arguing about their own and each other’s speed. Finally they decided on racing each other to see who was faster. The Rabbit and Terrapin determined the day, the starting place of the race and prearranged to run the race athwart the four mountain ridges and the winner would be who crossed the finish line first.
·       The Rabbit was so confident in his running ability that he said to the Terrapin, “You know you can’t run. You can never win the race, so I’ll give you the first ridge and then you’ll have only three to cross while I go over four.”
·       The Terrapin rejected the Rabbits offer and told him he would be alright, but on the inside, he was not very confident in himself. He decided to go home to his family and sent for his Terrapin friends because he was in need of all of their help and they agreed to help him. He knew he could not outrun the Rabbit in this race, but he wanted so bad to stop the Rabbit’s trash talking.
·       The day of the race had finally arrived and all of the animals had come to see the race. The Rabbit was with them at the beginning of the first ridge, while the Terrapin made his way to the second ridge, as they had agreed on. The race began and the Rabbit got off the furious pace as he raced with long jumps up the mountain expecting to pass the finish line before the Terrapin got over the second ridge. As he got up the mountain, he saw the Terrapin go over the ridge ahead of him.
·       The Terrapin kept up his great pace, distancing himself from the Rabbit and surprising him with how fast he was going. The Terrapin was way out in front of the Rabbit and the Rabbit was getting tired and nearly out of breath. He could not make another jump, and fell on the ground.
·       The Terrapin has positioned his friends at each ridge and himself at the fourth ridge to help win the race.

Blog Check-Up

For Blog Ideas, I looked at these three blogs.

Fred K

Matty Williams

Adrienne Crawford

I could tell by all of their blogs that they were very creative individuals. I could tell they spent more time than most in the details of their blogs. The first thing that caught my attention was the use of memes in the blogs, which is a good relief in the blogs. The second thing is that I have also thought about changing my background of my blog because I do not believe people can tell what my background is suppose to be. Matty Williams label bar was a really cool addition to the blog because it was see through, so it did not block his background.

Time Schedule

If I am being honest, I do not have a set schedule when it comes to this class or any of my classes. I just go with how my schedule with basketball is for the upcoming week, but with the basketball season winding down, I will have much more time on my hands. Usually, I do most of my homework really early in the week, so I do not have to worry about it during the later part of the week or weekend. I guess I would say I spend Monday and Tuesday, sometimes Wednesday getting my homework due for the week done, unless something comes up that changes my plans. My strategy is to get everything done early in the week, so I am not procrastinating or behind on my class work.

Week 7 Storytelling: The Man Who Was Selfish

The Man Who Was Selfish

There was a man named Rick Thompson, who was not a very good basketball player, who was playing at the local park by his house. He played and played and sat down on the table under the canopy to take a break, after awhile of resting he looked up and noticed three other people playing basketball. Rick had never seen these three people before and he was jealous of the talent and basketball skills they had. They made shot after shot, it seemed as if they would never miss a shot and were able to dunk the basketball with ease due to their athletic ability. These people were what Rick hoped he would be as a basketball player, but it had never conspired. He could not watch any longer to release and was determined to do something about it. Rick began to beg and plead with the three people about them helping and teaching him how to become as good a player as they were.
Eventually, Rick had begged so much that the people finally gave in and told him they would help him with his basketball skill to become as good as a player as they were. In return, Rick told all three of the people that he would give him a reward for them helping and teaching him.  After working with Rick for a couple of hours, Rick supplied the three people with his rewards with giving all three of them a $100 each. Also, Rick told the three individuals that he would advertise for them and send people there way, if they needed help improving their basketball skills. This allowed for the three people to start up a basketball skills academy to help players develop their skills. After awhile, the people had a lot of people lining up for their services and the money came with it, it allowed them to live in great comfort. Rick, on the other hand, began to become jealous again because of the recognition and wealth the three people were receiving when it was him who brought this plan to the forefront and he wanted a part of it. He had to figure out a way to get in the fold of everything.
His opportunity would quickly arise as a few of the players that came into the academy had not gotten much better, so he decided to intervene and take these few players under his wing. Rick used the same drills as the three other people, but did it in a much more detailed fashion to disguise what he was doing. The three people noticed what Rick was doing and tried to stop him. Rick told them and everyone else in the academy that he was the one who had taught the other three people what they knew regarding basketball and that he should be getting the recognition. The three people were hurt by Rick’s action and were quickly pushed out of the academy. Rick took over the academy; he immediately changed the routine and sequence of drills that the players went through. The three people began to here rumblings regarding what was happening at the academy and were asked to come back to take it back over because all of the players who had gotten better were now losing what they had gained.
The three people returned the next day to set things straight, but sat back and watched Rick demonstrate everything and could see the skill of each player decreasing. They took their stand and challenged Rick to a competition of 1-on-1. Rick would play each of them 1-on-1 and if any of them loss, then they would leave the academy forever, but if Rick lost to any of them, then he would leave the academy forever. The fate of each player was in the hands of three 1-on-1 games, and no one knew how it was going to end.

Author’s Note:
My original source for my story is based off of The Ungrateful Man. In The Ungrateful Man: There is a poor Hunter, who is traveling through the forest until he stumbles upon a deep hole where he finds a snake, leopard, rat, and a man. He did not want to help any of the animals, just the man, but the animals begged the Hunter until he agreed to free them from the hole. They all promised to reward the man for his actions and all gave him a gif. The man did not because h was also poor, but with the gifts from the animals, the Hunter gained much wealth. The man became jealous and created a plan to get the wealth for himself. There were some robbers who stole from the King, so the man decided he would ask the King if there was a reward for turning in the robber. The man pointed out the Hunter as the thief and he was brought to the Court. They asked him how he gained his wealth, but did not believe his story. The Hunter was punished to death the next day. Before he died, he asked the King to use the gift that the snake had given him which was a venom antidote, but needed “traitor’s blood” to mix with it. In this time, the King pointed out the man who had betrayed the Hunter. The Hunter was eventually freed and the King gifted him with honours.

Week 7 Reading Diary, continued: Western African Folklore

Reading Diary #7, continued: Western African Folktale
·       The Ungrateful Man: There was Hunter, who was extremely poor, who was wondering all through the forest in search of food. He walked and walked and came to a deep hole, in that hold there was a leopard, a serpent, a rat, and another man. All of these different animals and the man fell in the hole, but were unable to get out. They began to constantly heckle and beg the hunter to help them out of the hole they had fell in. The Hunter did not want to release any of them except the man because he said the leopard had stolen his cattle and eaten them, the serpent bit men and caused their death, and the rat did nothing for anyone. Eventually, the animals begged so much that the Hunter gave in and freed them from the pit. I return, each of the animals told the Hunter that they would give him a reward for his kindness, but the man would not because he was very poor. Each animal supplied the Hunter with his rewards with the serpent giving him a very powerful antidote for venom. The leopard killed animals for him and supplied him with food for many weeks. The rat returned with cloths, gold dust, and ivory, these items would help make the man rich. After he had received his gifts, the Hunter was allowed to live in great comfort. The man, on the other hand, was not pleased with the Hunter’s good fortune, and wanted to harm him. His opportunity would quickly arise as the few robbers broke into the King’s palace and stolen his valuables. The man made his way to the King and asked if there was a reward for pointing out the thief. The King told him he would give a half of what was stolen if he found the thief. The Hunter was put in prison and brought to Court and was asked to tell how he became wealthy. They did not believe his story, he was immediately condemned to death the next day. The Hunter asked to use the antidote from the serpent, but needed a traitor’s blood, in which the King pointed out the man. The King proclaimed, “There stands the worst traitor for he gave up the kind host who had saved his life.” The man was beheaded and the King honored the Hunter with honours and sent him home.
